Using Bloomberg with Excel In-Person

Bloomberg, available on fixed terminals in the Library Financial Resources Suite, is a global financial markets database providing economic, company and industry data, and reports. It includes business news, analytics and real time pricing for over 5 million securities (including public companies) world-wide. It also includes extensive historical data. You can use Bloomberg with Excel, exporting from Bloomberg functions, via Excel Templates, and creating formulas to import datasets via the Excel-add in.

During this in person practical session, we will cover:

  • Exporting data from Bloomberg functions (e.g. FA, GP, WATC)
  • Bloomberg Excel Templates (XLTP)
  • Accessing the Bloomberg Excel add-in
  • Developing and adapting Bloomberg Query Language (BQL) formulas to generate large datasets in an efficient way (focusing on company data, though the skills developed will be of use for other types of data too)
  • Using the Data Field Finder (FLDS) to identify variable mnemonic codes for use in BQL formulas
  • Techniques for proof-reading your BQL formula to resolve issues
  • Help (e.g. BQLX) and further training (Bloomberg Spreadsheet Analysis) available

Attendees at this seminar should have previously attended a getting Getting Started with Bloomberg LibSmart class, or have past experience using Bloomberg.

This session will be in person, in the Financial Resources Suite (Bann230a) on the 2nd floor of the Library.

A Getting Started with Bloomberg class is available to register for on the day before this, Monday 1st June.
